“I am an Events Management Student at Leeds Metropolitan University and first heard about The Haven from a close family friend. I wished to show my support as they do wonderful things for people affected by breast cancer.
I got in contact with the fundraising team here at The Yorkshire Haven whilst I was working on my placement year and began volunteering in 2009.
The work has been interesting and varied. I have brought my ideas and knowledge of events management and they have given me the opportunity to put them into practise in a busy, vibrant charity.
There is always a lot to do here and it has been a very ‘hands-on’ job! I helped organise the charity’s involvement in the UK’s first ‘High Heel-a-thon’ – launched by Kimberly Walsh from Girl’s Aloud - which raised over £12,000. I have also helped at a ladies Luncheon with Barbara Taylor Bradford and The Fall Ball 2009. I’m currently working in the office persuading people to donate high-value prizes for raffles and auctions held at Haven events throughout the year.
The Haven is a breathtaking place. I have enjoyed helping them to raise the much needed funds they require to continue to offer the free services to all their Visitors …and I hope to continue volunteering for them in the future.”
