The Haven

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury'sSainsbury's in Fulham Broadway have chosen The Haven as their local charity of the year for the second year running. Employees will be participating in a wide range of fundraising activities over the next 12 months, including the Four Bridges walk, a fundraising quiz and various other challenges. They are also promoting the charity in-store and in the Fulham Broadway Centre.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year, they helped raise over £20,000 for us through a watercress promotion in all their stores nationwide.  Vitacress, the watercress supplier, then donated 5p per pack of watercress sold to The Haven.

On Monday 6 December, Sara Davenport the founder of The Haven, and her children’s nanny, Wendy Ricketts – the inspiration for the founding of the charity - were presented with a large cheque by Simon Conway, Commercial Manager for Vitacress Salads, at the Fulham Broadway Sainsbury’s Store.

Sara Davenport, our Founder, said: “We are thrilled with the amount raised by this joint watercress promotion between Sainsbury’s and Vitacress.  The money raised will help many more women affected by breast cancer benefit from The Haven’s unique programme of care and we are hugely grateful”.

The promotion was held to mark the culmination of a two year research project into the potential of watercress to suppress breast cancer cell development. The study found that eating watercress daily can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells, which is considered to be an important trigger in the development of cancer.

Sainsbury’s Fulham Broadway store manager Paul Cane said: “This is the perfect Christmas present for our local charity of the year. We hope Haven support centres including the one in Fulham will really benefit from this money, and our colleagues at Fulham Broadway would like to thank every customer who helped to contribute towards this fantastic total”.

And Victoria Gilbert, produce buyer for Sainsbury’s added: “The Haven is a charity that’s close to many people’s hearts, and Sainsbury’s and Vitacress hope that this money will make a difference to their Breast Cancer Support Centres. Our colleagues at Fulham Broadway are raising further funds this Christmas for the Fulham support centre, and Sainsbury’s will continue to support this worthy cause”.

On Monday 13th December, Laura Irwin and Lois Page from The Haven were presented with a cheque for £1,000 by Paul Cane, Trisha Richardson, Eve Harris, Sue Murphy and Chris Tomlinson- Fulham Broadway and North End Road Management. The £1,000 donation was raised over the last few months by customers, employees and Management at Sainsbury’s Fulham Broadway and North End Road. This wonderful donation will enable us to continue our free programme of in-depth support, improving the quality of life of anyone affected by breast cancer.

A huge thank you to everyone at Sainsbury’s, what a wonderful Christmas present!

Sir John Lillie Primary School performed a fantastic selection of Christmas carols after the presentation, they were a joy to watch and brought a smile to shopper's faces! The children held a collection raising £155 for The Haven! Well done!
