The Haven

Where we do it

HavensThe Haven was founded by Sara Davenport in 1997. The idea for the charity came following the experience of her children's nanny, Wendy Ricketts, who was diagnosed with the illness. Sara was concerned by the lack of emotional support and information available to people with breast cancer. Believing that "no-one should have to face breast cancer alone", Sara sold her art business and put all of her energy into creating The Haven.

The Haven in London is housed in an old Welsh Presbyterian church which has also been used as a dance and drama school. It was virtually derelict when Sara bought in 1998, but with the support of many generous individuals and companies, and the expertise of architect Martin Hay, the building was transformed into the wonderful peaceful and healing environment which is now The Haven and was opened in February 2000.

The building in Hereford was originally a YWCA hostel, and offered a safe home and much-needed support to hundreds of women. Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors and, in particular, The Fred Bulmer Charitable Trust, The Haven was opened in Hereford by our Patron, HRH the Prince of Wales on 7 January 2004.

The third Haven in Leeds opened in October 2008. Outside, its striking blue façade, in the state-of-the-art Gateway building, is hard to miss. Inside, a sense of peace and tranquillity exudes from its curved walls and subtle decor.
