The Haven

Sonya's Story

Sonya GreerWell on the way to recovery after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, Sonya Greer, 28, took her life in her hands and did a sky dive at Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, raising 3,000 for The Yorkshire Haven in Leeds.

"At the lowest point in my life The Haven really was my Haven. I found a place where I got help from people who truly knew and understood what I was going through. I met people who were going through the same as I was and we were able to share our worries and concerns and this was an unbelievable help.  As much as family and friends are there for you, they can never know how it feels to be fighting cancer. The Haven helped me so much that I wanted to give something back to them. I had heard about sky diving and although absolutely terrified of heights I decided the time was right for me to face my fears. When you have been through what I have been you realise that life can be short and you must grab every opportunity you can.

I was petrified as I went up but my terror quickly turned to exhilaration and excitement as I realised that there was no going back. My sky dive was the most unbelievable experience and as soon as I got to the ground I just wanted to do it again.
