The Haven

Sarah Kerr

'When I first found the lump in my breast I had an unexplained intuition that it was cancer. As I am just 31 years old, I was constantly being told that this was very unlikely, so I tried to remain positive. Despite my intuition, the diagnosis was still a great shock to me, and also to my partner of the last 6 years, Raj.

At the time of diagnosis I felt sure that I wanted to have an operation to have the lump removed as soon as possible, but the idea of follow-up treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy was terrifying. The only solace I felt from the diagnosis consultation was when my surgeon told me about The Haven and that I was entitled to some free complementary therapies there. This was wonderful news to me for two reasons – 1, I have much interest and experience in complementary therapy and value it greatly, and 2, I knew that money was about to become very tight as I am self-employed and therefore not entitled to any sick pay.

When I first visited The London Haven, I was amazed at the sense of peace, well-being and positivity that greeted me as soon as I entered the door. The whole building has such a loving vibration that I instantly wanted to move in! On my first visit both the reception staff and Tina were so welcoming and helpful that I was instantly relieved to know I had a plan of therapies ahead that would help me through such a difficult time.

Each therapy I have had has helped me in numerous ways – not only in dealing with the cancer itself, but also allowing me to see and fix things from my past that may well have contributed to my having developed cancer so young in the first place. I have completely changed my lifestyle and am now following a much healthier diet. Overall, I feel in better health – physically, mentally and emotionally – than I did before I ever developed cancer. In this way, The Haven has allowed me to transform a very negative situation into something positive, and given me back control over my life and my health.

The Haven has also helped Raj, who found our situation very difficult to handle following my surgery, by offering him counselling sessions. He too now feels much more positive and in control of the future, and our relationship is stronger than ever. I think it is to The Haven’s credit that they do not forget about partners to those with cancer who need just as much support.

After some thought following two successful surgeries, I decided that I would not proceed with either radiotherapy or chemotherapy. I have found much support from The Haven in this decision, which has been very scary to make, and would love to personally thank every single person who works and volunteers there.'
