The Haven

Helena Cuneen

“I was first diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, then two years ago, I developed secondary cancer of the bone. I knew before my scan that something was wrong – having cancer makes you much more aware of your own body.

I found The Haven around the time the medical treatment for my secondary cancer kicked in. I was a bit of an emotional wreck and trying to put on a brave face. It was affecting my family too - their nerves were frayed.

I thought I’d have to justify to The Haven why they should help me, but the second question they asked me was “when can you come?” I first met one of the specialist nurses who helped design my treatment plan. I remember asking her: “Do you have a treatment that can help me forget I have cancer?” Mind and Body Therapy was recommended instead! I also do herbalism and acupuncture. The Haven’s support and expertise has really helped me pick myself up off the floor. With logic and kindness they have unpicked my worries and help me decipher a way forward. They help me focus on life, not cancer.

The Haven has eased things for my family too. I realised that there is a difference between talking to family member and talking to a specialist about how I'm feeling. Having the support of The Haven means my friends and family can now just get on with doing what they do best – loving me.

When my mind and body therapist helped me identify my biggest and absolutely crushing fear - that I didn't want to hurt my family - I left the room feeling as though someone had stuck a pin in the bubble of fear and freed me. Physically too, the affects have been amazing – one day I walked in limping, then after acupuncture my limp was gone. The herbalist helps limit bone inflammation and gives me the courage to listen to my body and respond, rather just blank it all out in fear.

I'm not working now so I’m free to practice my first love which is painting. I spend quality time with family and close friends, run half marathons, volunteer and haven't altogether given up on finding love! I have sad moments, am perhaps less tolerant of poor behaviour and negative people and often prioritise fun over obligation - but I just blame that on my medication!

I often hear people say 'I'm lucky my cancer hasn't spread'. Mine did but I actually feel lucky. I appreciate more all the good things I have in my life. True to its name, The Haven is a wonderful place. They don’t fear cancer, so why should I? “
