Reflexology

What is reflexology?
Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflexes or points on the feet and hands that relate to every gland, organ and part of the body. These are thought to have originated in the Chinese meridian (energy) system in the body. A reflexologist aims to help the body heal itself by applying systematic pressure to the feet (with fingers and thumbs) to relieve stress and tension, improve blood supply and promote the unblocking of nerve impulses.
How can reflexology help?
Reflexology is hugely beneficial to you at any stage of treatment. The potential benefits include:
- reducing stress and anxiety levels and aiding relaxation
- supporting the lymphatic system
- boosting the immune system
- balancing the digestive system
- alleviating nausea
- helping the body cope with the side effects of chemotherapy
- balancing hormones and so helping to reduce hot flushes
What happens in a reflexology session?
The sessions usually last for an hour, which comprise a short assessment, the reflexology treatment and a period of rest. The therapist will work on your bare feet.
When can reflexology be given?
Reflexology can be given any time except when you have just undertaken chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. It would be best to wait until your body has begun to recover.
Number and length of appointments
Appointments are an hour and treatment is usually given in a short course of up to six sessions.
