Dr Barbara Baker BSc, PhD - Senior Research Fellow
Dr Barbara Baker graduated with a 1st Class BSc Honours degree in Biochemistry in 1977, and was awarded a PhD in Biochemistry/Microbiology in 1981. Barbara was a Lecturer at Imperial College, London for 10 years, heading a small research group investigating the immunopathogenesis of psoriasis. After almost 23 years of research in the field of Immunodermatology, she has published 70 papers and written three books on the subject, two of which she has self-published.
Barbara joined The Haven as Senior Research Fellow in April 2006. Barbara’s main interest is to understand, from an immunological perspective, the mechanisms involved in the improvement of the quality of life of women with breast cancer when complementary therapies are integrated with standard medical treatment.
Barbara held the title of Visiting Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Healthcare, Faculty of Medicine and Health has been conferred at the University of Leeds for a period of 2 years from March 2008 to 2010.

Tina Glynn, MSc, BSc, RGN - Haven Programme Manager, Cancer Nurse Specialist, London
Tina has been actively involved with integrating complementary therapies into NHS cancer care for the past 15 years. She has a nursing background and has specialised in cancer and palliative medicine. Tina has a MSc in Complementary Therapies from the University of Westminster. In addition to leading the team of therapists at the Haven in London, Tina offers specialist cancer information and support, massage,aromatherapy, manual lymphatic drainage sessions as well as Lymphoedema Awareness classes.
Lois Page- Community Fundraising
After Graduating from Bath Spa University in 2008 with a degree in Business and Management, Lois gained two years fundraising experience in the charity sector before joining The Haven as Community Fundraising Executive in November 2010.
Tasha Mason - Head of Trusts and Foundations
Tasha taught English abroad for almost ten years before returning to the UK to work in the charity sector. She was involved with organisations working in health, social welfare, disability and international development before joining The Haven in September 2009.
Laura Irwin - Head of Events
Laura joined The Haven in April 2009. She has over ten years of event experience in a variety of sectors ranging from a stately home in the north of Scotland to the world of shipping where she was the senior event manager for the launch of a number of ships.Susannah Behr - Events Manager
Susannah started her events career working at the Grand National at Aintree whilst studying English at Liverpool University. She went on to work on exhibitions such as the Ideal Home Show and the Vitality Show, and then spent four years organising public and corporate events at the Imperial War Museum before joining The Haven in March 2011.
Marissa Sheppard - Reception/ Administrator, London
Marissa joined The Haven in April 2008 as Receptionist and Administrator. She has over 15 years' experience in Reception and office work and before joining us worked at a local GP surgery.
Evelyn Jardine - Receptionist
Before coming to The Haven, Evelyn worked as a Corporate Receptionist for a large Third World Development and Relief organisation and has also worked as a Clinical Receptionist at St Georges Hospital in London. Evelyn has a keen interest in Nutrition, Health and Wellbeing and knows the benefit of all that The Haven has to offer.
Fiona Snowdon - Office Manager
Fiona joined The Haven team as Office & Reception Administrator in May 2011, bringing with her 21 years experience in both the NHS and charity sector. Fiona started her career as a receptionist and latterly was a Manager in a GP practice. In between, she spent two happy years working in a hospice. Fiona is delighted to be a part of the Haven London team.
Dr Edem Onofeghara, PhD, LLM, B.L, LLB – Haven Macmillan Welfare Benefits and Money Adviser
Edem joins The Haven as its Welfare Benefits and Money Adviser. Since 2008 Edem has been channelling her knowledge of insolvency and social welfare laws towards giving advice at her local Citizens Advice Bureau. Edem is fully aware of the financial difficulties people can face whilst battling major illnesses, but she is equally aware of the difference that she can make towards improving people’s quality of life by giving people the right advice to maximize their income. She looks forward to making a difference at The Haven.
Lucy Hone- Capital Appeal Manager
Lucy Hone lives in Gosport and has lived in Hampshire most of her life. She comes to the Haven with over 12 years of fundraising experience gained in both the Heritage and Social Welfare sectors of the charitable sector. Her previous role was as Fundraising Manager for the Mary Rose Trust working on the £35M capital appeal for a new museum for Henry VIII’s warship. Bringing a Haven to Wessex is an exciting challenge and one that she feels privileged to be part of. The mother of two children – Sam 23, working in London, and Elizabeth 20, finishing her 2nd year at Portsmouth University. In her spare time she and her partner Mervyn enjoy anything to do with the arts – particularly live music, and also sailing, gardening and walking. No one would ever guess to look at her that she has a passion for Moto GP and in 2006 rode her large motorcycle down to the Czech Republic. Currently bike-less she is hoping to correct this in the next year!
Therapists
Sally Jarvie-Therapist
After an initial career in social work with families and children, Sally trained as an integrative counsellor in 1993. She worked in various settings including a bereavement service, addiction centre and in private practice. During this time she also trained and worked as a couples counsellor with Relate and over a 10 year period worked as both a counsellor and later as a Clinical Supervisor with Relate. In 2001 Sally began training as a psychodynamic psychotherapist and became a fully qualified UKCP registered therapist in 2005. Sally now works mainly in private practice as well as working at the Haven on one day a week. Sally says “I have a deep interest in how we develop and make sense of our lives, particularly at times of loss and crises and that by becoming more aware of the patterns and roles we ‘fall into’ we can make more positive choices about how we want to move forward. In this way a crisis can be an opportunity to live in ways that are more attuned to our core sense of self and less determined by our past experiences.”
Julia Ruppert -Expressive Arts Programme Therapist
Julia is a Creative Practitioner with over 25 years of experience delivering expressive arts workshops,designing arts-based communityengagement projects and installations and coordinating art exhibitions. Trained in art therapy at Canada’s Concordia University, Julia’s work takes a proactive approach to wellbeing through the creative process. Her interests include the application of Purposeful Creative Activity (channelling creative activity to meet goal-directed objectives)to support wellbeing, resilience, collaborative learning, community engagement and transformational leadership. Julia holds a research MA in Art Psychotherapy from Goldsmiths, University of London where she explored the applicationof art therapy-based strategies to support employee mental wellbeing. Her research interests include the development of short-term interventions combining positive psychology and arttherapy-based techniques to enhance wellbeing and resilience. Julia currently leads the Haven’s Expressive Arts Programme where Visitors use the process of art making to explore the inherent positive value of creative expression.
Sue Beer - Emotional Freedom Technique Practioner
Sue is an advanced Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner and trainer. She is also an experienced hypnotherapist, Master Neuro Linguistic Progamming (NLP) practitioner, trainer and examiner for The European College of Holistic Medicine's highly acclaimed Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy, NLP and Life Coaching. She is also a student of A Course in Miracles.
Nadia Brydon - Senior Therapist
Nadia has been involved in Complementary Medicine since the early 1980s and has qualifications in Western Herbal Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Bowen Therapy, Iridology, Vodder Lymph Drainage Massage, Ayurvedic Massage Therapy, and is a Hippocrates Health Educator and Associate Raw and Living Food Chef and Instructor, a Homeopath and Naturopath and is currently undertaking a part-time MSc at the University of Westminster, Department of Complementary Health Studies. Nadia also teaches Herbal Medicine at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in London and Dublin and specializes in Naturopathic and raw and living food diets, herbal detoxification and rejuvenation and chronic disease, particularly cancer of any type using herbs and diet.

Sarah Cantor - Shiatsu Practitioner
Sarah graduated from the British School of Shiatsu-Do in 2000 and is a registered member of the Shiatsu Society. She first became interested in Shiatsu through living and working in Japan for many years. Shiatsu-Do means 'Way of Shiatsu' and means that her approach takes into account the whole person and their way of life. Sarah offers individual shiatsu sessions to Visitors.

Sara Davenport - Emotional Healer
Sara is the founder of The Haven, a Cambridge University graduate and complementary therapist. She specialises in balancing emotional health and is particularly interested in the impact that this can have on health and wellbeing. She has been working with energetic medicine for the past 18 years, originally training with the National Federation of Spiritual Healers and later studying Feng Shui, dowsing, Reiki, Nutri-Energetic Systems, Kinesiology and geopathic stress.
Sara offers individual sessions of emotional healing which combine different techniques from her trainings over the years.
Gosia Gorna - Mind Body Therapist
Gosia has worked for many years assisting people with life threatening illnesses. Her work is based on the idea that our emotions and thoughts have a powerful effect on our physical body and general wellbeing, and it is important to take them into consideration in a process of change and healing. Gosia has qualified in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Time-Line Therapy, Thought Field Therapy, Sedona Method, Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching. She offers individual and group sessions.
Dr Charles Innes - Homeopathic Physician
Charles came from a medical family, qualified in medicine, got seriously ill, benefited from complementary medicine and now practices homeopathy at The Haven and herbalism and healing privately. He has worked at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, been the UK’s lead practitioner for the Gerson Therapy, co-founded one of London’s first large complementary medicine centres, pioneered new treatments and been featured in the national media.
He is a member of the General Medical Council, Faculty of Homeopathy, Society of Homeopaths, National Institute of Medical Herbalists and Confederation of Healing Organisations.Charles uses both conventional homeopathic remedies and a radionics machine. This computerised device enables him to give treatments during the actual session which can be very helpful.
Alex Laird - Medical Herbalist
Alex qualified as a Medical Herbalist in 1999 and set up and still runs the first herbal medicine clinic in a UK hospital at Whipps Cross University Hospital. Her four-year Diploma in Herbal Medicine (Phytotherapy) covered the medical sciences, pharmacology and nutrition, as well as traditional herbal therapeutics and apprenticeship in the training clinic. Alex is a member of both the National Institute of Medical Herbalists and the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy. Alex offers individual sessions as well as educational demonstrations on food and herbs for health and wellbeing.
Sarah Lumley - Nutritionist and NES Practitioner
Sarah's background is in business, marketing, and PR where she specialised in agricultural, pharmaceutical and food type clients. Sarah then joined the Milk Marketing Board and where she was responsible for all their health and consumer PR and began to do food and recipe writing. After six years in this position, she set up her own PR company specialising in food PR and food styling and recipe development. Sarah then became more interested in nutrition and completed the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) course which led her to focus her career entirely on nutrition. She then became the Marketing Director of ION for two years before joining The Haven in 2002 where she offers nutritional guidance and cookery workshops.
Carol Pearson - Counsellor
Carol has been working as a counsellor for 20 years. She trained with Relate, gaining a certificate in Marital & Couple Counselling, an MA in Couple Therapy with the University of East London, Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy and trained and worked as a Supervisor. Carol has also undertaken an Introductory and Second Year Advanced Course in Group Work with the Institute of Group Analysis. She is currently undertaking further training in Embodied Relational Therapy. Carol is an Accredited Member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
Emma Roberts - Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner
Emma Roberts is an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Master and Trainer, and a fellow of the AAMET. She is also a clinical hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner. Emma is co-founder of The EFT Centre in London, and is also a trainer and examiner at the European College of Holistic Medicine.
Emma believes that EFT is a practical tool to be shared with everyone. This belief of sharing EFT is at the core of all her work. She offers group workshops and individual sessions at BCH, working with releasing both the emotional and physical responses to cancer diagnosis and offering Visitors a way of managing their own emotional wellbeing during their journey with cancer. EFT is a very gentle and safe way of working which allows Visitors to take some charge back over their healing.
Patrick Swan - Hair and Makeup Workshops
Patrick trained as a hairdresser in 1974 and has practised in salons and on photo shoots, appearing as an expert on many UK television programmes. He is a member of BABTAC and The Federation of Image Consultants. Patrick provides a Shopping Experience for Red Letter Days, image consultancy for Concierge.com and Seventy Thirty.com and speaks regularly about fashion and beauty in the media and through public appearances.

Tricia Teahan - Shiatsu Practitioner, Craniosacral Therapist and Qi Gong instructor
Tricia initially studied and practised Ki Aikido, and has been practising Shiatsu and Craniosacral Therapy since the 1990s. She is a graduate of the British School of Shiatsu-Do London and a graduate of The Karuna Institute in Devon (Craniosacral). She specialises in Shiatsu for pregnancy, labour and the post-natal period. She also works with babies using both Craniosacral and Shiatsu. She has practised Qi Gong for many years – her teachers being Ged Sumner, Thalbert Allen and Zhi Xing Wang. She offers Qi Gong classes.
Eve Warren - Life-work Coach
A qualified teacher, and with an M.Ed in Human Relations, Eve Warren has been a training consultant and life-work coach for over 20 years. For The Haven she offers one to one life-work coaching and runs workshops in Practical Assertiveness, Stress Fitness and Life-work Coaching.
She came as a Visitor to The London Haven in 2000, has balanced motherhood and full-time work, changed career twice and co-authored two successful books - on stress management and professional development for women. Areas of specialism in her own coaching and training practice include career development, change and stress management, women’s leadership, communication including public speaking and interpersonal skills. She is co-founder of WiSH - supporting and encouraging more women into school headship.
Julia Williams - Easy Steps - The Lebed Method Teacher
Julia is an Easy Steps - The Lebed Method teacher and a natural health therapist qualified in aromatherapy, reflexology, massage and iridology. Julia has also been teaching yoga for the past 10 years and teaching complementary therapies in higher education for 4 years. Julia has been working in the clinical field since qualifying as a practitioner in 1993. Easy Steps - The Lebed Method combines her therapeutic work with her love for movement, dance and music providing an exciting way to assist clients with lymphodema, or those at risk. Easy Steps - The Lebed Method is also suitable for clients with a need for gentle, focused exercise in a safe and fun environment.
Christopher Woodward - Acupuncturist
Christopher is a Acupuncturist and Ear Acupuncturist, and is a member of the British Acupuncture Council. He has a degree in Psychology, Philosophy and Drama and has done some acupuncture training in Taiwan. Chris practises both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element Styles acupuncture. He is also a Craniosacral Therapist and Reiki Master as well as an Internal Martial Artist practising: Taiqi, Qi Gong, BaGua, I Ching, Xingue mediations. Christopher has experience of working in a variety of areas including drug addiction, infertility, pre-natal and post-natal treatment and newborn infants.
Alix Pickering Reflexologist
Alix has been practising reflexology since July 2000 after completing her training at the British School of Complementary Therapy in Harley Street, London. She is a member of the Association of Reflexologists. She practises privately and she has been working at the The Haven since June 2010. Alix works with clients at the Haven to bring about relaxation, balance and emotional healing through the stimulation of particular points on the feet. Tension or congestion in any part of the foot mirrors tension or congestion in a corresponding part of the body and treating the whole foot can have a deeply relaxing and healing effect on the body as a whole.
Jenny Fox - Craniosacral Therapist
Jenny originally worked in pharmaceutical research. During that time she gained a degree in psychology and became increasingly interested in other approaches to health care. Since 1992 she has been working as a therapist, initially in massage. Counselling training (Psychosynthesis) was followed by an exploration of various forms of bodywork and the interplay between body/mind/feelings. Jenny graduated in Craniosacral Therapy in 2004 and also works with a Carers organisation offering therapeutic support to a frequently undervalued group. She enjoys
Ros Newnham – Spiritual Healer and Bach Flower Remedy Practitioner
Ros is an accredited healer from The College of Psychic Studies, London , where she practised for some years in their Healing Clinics, and is also a Bach Flower Remedy practitioner. She first trained and worked as a Relate counsellor and has always had an abiding interest in healing all levels of the person. She has been at The Haven since 2003.
Our Founder

Sara Davenport founded The Haven in 1997 because she was concerned by the lack of emotional support and information available at that time to anyone diagnosed with the illness.
